Meridian Window Pros replaces window glass in homes across Meridian. When only the glass has failed, we can often keep your frame and put new glass in it.
Cracked or broken glass
We replace cracked and broken panes in single-pane and double-pane windows. We measure the glass, order a new pane or a new piece of sealed double-pane glass to fit, and set it back in your frame.
If a pane cracks, we suggest you tape over the crack from the inside and then call us. We'll tell you over the phone whether it's safe to leave until the new glass comes in.
Fog between the two panes
In the double-pane glass we fit, two layers of glass sit either side of a sealed air space. A report from the National Bureau of Standards, now NIST, says that when the seal on some of this double-pane glass fails, moisture gets into the air space, which in the end fogs the glass and stops you seeing clearly through it.
We can't wipe that fog away, because it is inside the glass, so we replace the sealed double-pane glass and keep your frame if it's still in good shape.
New glass or a whole new window?
Before we quote, we look hard at the frame. We suggest new glass when the frame is solid, opens and shuts well, and keeps air and water out. If the frame is rotten, warped or cracked, we'll say so and quote a full replacement window instead.
ENERGY STAR calls single-pane windows, the ones with only one layer of glass, big energy wasters. If your old windows are single-pane, ask us to price energy-efficient windows too, so you can weigh one against the other.
Glass for Meridian's weather
When we put in new glass, we give you two ratings for it.
The first rating, the U-factor, tells you how fast heat passes through a window. The lower the U-factor, the less heat gets through, so you want it low.
The solar heat gain coefficient, or SHGC, is a rating for how much of the sun's heat gets through the glass. The lower the number, the less heat comes in.
The National Weather Service office in Boise says the Treasure Valley is a high desert, where nights cool down fast and days heat up fast. For the Northern part of the U.S., ENERGY STAR recommends windows with a U-factor of 0.22 or less.
ENERGY STAR's advice for colder climates is a low U-factor and a higher SHGC on a south wall, a low SHGC or shade on east and west walls, and the lowest U-factor you can afford on north walls. When we replace glass in more than one window, we pick the glass for the wall each window is on.
What to get in writing
Ask for these in writing, whoever you hire:
- Whether the price covers the glass only, or the glass and the frame.
- The U-factor and SHGC of the new glass, so you can compare quotes.
- What the warranty on the new glass seal covers, and for how long. ENERGY STAR says glass seal warranties should be at least 10 years.
We price window glass replacement for your house once we've measured, and you get that quote in writing.
Questions about window glass replacement in Meridian
Can you replace just one pane?
Yes, we can replace a single pane, one window or every window in the house.
Do I need a permit to replace window glass in Meridian?
The City of Meridian's handout on residential projects lists window size changes among the jobs that need a permit. When we put new glass in your existing frame, the opening stays the same size, and we'll tell you before we start if your job needs a permit.
Can I get safety or impact glass?
Yes, we can fit laminated glass, which ENERGY STAR lists as a premium option for impact resistance.
Will new glass lower my energy bill?
ENERGY STAR says upgrading to ENERGY STAR certified windows lowers household energy bills by an average of 12%. That figure is for whole certified windows, so we'll show you what new glass alone would give you.
My windows get wet on the inside in winter. Is the glass failing?
Not always. ENERGY STAR says water forms on the inside of a window when the glass gets cold enough for the damp air in the room to turn to water on it, and that keeping indoor humidity in check helps. Fog trapped between the two panes is a different problem, and that is the kind we fix with new glass.
Can you fix a window that won't stay open or won't close?
Yes, we'll check the frame and the moving parts when we come out, and tell you if a repair will do.
